Our Courses.
All courses will be held in my workshop, set in the beautiful New Forest.
I try and limit the course to 4 people at a time to ensure you all receive the time and attention you need, but if you would like a larger group, please call.
The courses are relaxed and will be tailored to your ability, so it doesn't matter if you are a complete novice or someone looking to improve their skills, I will be guide you through the whole process.
Fundamentals of stick making.
Join us for an immersive one-day hands-on course where you will delve into the fundamentals of stick making techniques. This engaging experience will provide you with the opportunity to learn all about the essential principles from choosing your shank, straightening your stick, the marriage, cutting the crook, sanding and finishing techniques.
By the end of the day you will have a walking stick in progress that you can take home and finish.
Whether you're a budding artisan or an experienced creator, you will gain practical skills and insights.

The whole process.
Join us for a rejuvenating 2-day course that begins with a serene walk through a beautiful private woodland, where nature's charm inspires creativity. In the tranquil morning hours, we will immerse ourselves in the beauty of our surroundings and look to cut the perfect stick (an art in itself!).
We then return to the workshop to steam and straighten the stick, cutting the crook on a bandsaw and join the crook to the shank, known as the marriage. You will then start to file and shape the crook and finally finish with some fine sanding and you (should) leave with a finished walking stick.
Whether you're a seasoned artisan or a curious beginner, this course promises an enriching experience that harmonises nature and creativity.

Entry into carving, carve an Otter head.
This course is designed for individuals who wish to embark on the rewarding journey of carving a walking stick head. Throughout the lessons, you will explore the intricacies of this traditional craft, gaining hands-on experience while being guided through fundamental techniques and tools, with a focus on carving, inspiring creativity and skill development.
You will have the opportunity to cut your Otters head from a blank of wood and then with a multi motor, start to bulk out your Otter and then finally carving the fine detail, we will talk through all the burrs to use and what burr's create the best effects.
We will walk through all the fundamentals of carving with a multi motor tool and how to create your piece of art.
Courses are 2 days in duration, but depending on your ability you may not finish the carve, if you don't have the ability to finish your otter at home we do offer the opportunity to pop back and use the workshop to finish your piece of art of on a stick.

An individual piece of art on a stick.
Embrace your creativity and indulge in the captivating world of crafting, where you will have the freedom to design and carve your very own piece of art on a stick. Let your imagination run wild as you explore various patterns, shapes, and textures, transforming a simple stick into a unique masterpiece that reflects your personal style.
Whether you choose to depict nature, abstract designs, or whimsical characters, the possibilities are endless. This hands-on experience not only allows for artistic expression but also provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with the traditional craft of stick making, celebrating the joy of creating something truly one-of-a-kind.
This course is designed for those people who already have some basic or carving ability, or have attended one of my other courses.
You can choose from a choice of materials, wood, antler or buffalo horn to suit your design.
The duration of the course is a minimum of 3 days as there will be a element of time given to designing, reviewing and talking through how the concept will work as a walking stick.
By the end of the course you will have the knowledge to continue to create your own pieces of art.

Buffalo horn crook - stick making.
Join us for an engaging two-day course where you will have the opportunity to learn hands-on techniques for boiling, steaming, and bending buffalo horn. This immersive experience will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to master these essential methods, allowing you to create unique and intricate pieces.
Produce a beautiful buffalo horn crook, you will then file and shape the crook, marry to the shank, finally finishing with some fine sanding and polishing.
Whether you are a seasoned crafter or just starting out, this course is designed to inspire creativity and enhance your craftsmanship.
